The Walters exhibits an extensive collection of ancient and contemporary art. The project entailed the renovation and addition of the museum's wing adjoining the original 19th century building modeled after an Italian palazzo. The renovation has revitalized the museum's image as an important cultural center while increasing its capacity for artwork and visitors alike.

The most significant architectural contribution was the creation of a four-story atrium containing the new main entrance and ceiling suspended circulation stair. The exhibit halls throughout the facility were updated and made handicap accessible. The lower level was converted into a Family Arts Center for youth education. The adjoining armory, exquisitely detailed with turn of the century stone vaults was restored and modified to contain the new museum store. In addition to the exhibit halls on levels two and three, the fourth level was designed to house the museum's library and conservation department.

This project was designed with Kallmann McKinnell & Wood in 1998 (Project Architect: Colin Smith)
