Charles St. Jail & MBTA Red Line

Though currently vacant, the Charles Street Jail has the potential to become a vibrant new center of development between Boston's Beacon Hill and the West End. This site, which lies at the juncture of Charles & Cambridge Street, Storrow Drive and the Red Line (mass transit) represents an important joint in the city's fabric. This proposal reclaims land from an array of road access ramps for mixed use development and reinterprets the "figure ground" of the jail site. The jail yard is developed while the historically significant walls of the jail are preserved, and a new outdoor public space is conceived.
