Yokohama Port Competition

The Zo No Hana district is a key site for Yokohama; a site where different forces come to a juncture: the ground and the water, the city grid and the shore piers, the native and the foreign, the past and the future. We propose a project that articulates the different forces of the city through overlapping scales, uses and events.

Despite its proximity to the city center, waterfronts have played a peripheral role in the urban structure; due to the nature of its activities and population, as well as the character and scale of its constructions, the port has been kept separate from the life of the city. Recent waterfront redevelopments have proposed exclusive uses; whether recreational or residential, they have maintained that segregation.

The fundamental strategy of this project is to overlap a variety of programs on the site. The confluence of residences, workshops, offices, a marketplace, a waterfront promenade, and services, offers opportunities for intense urban life.

This competition entry was created in collaboration with Gabriel Feld.
